Light Like Air

wind manually generated to demonstrate effect

The body of a large concrete wall comes alive as its blocks extrude from the surface, appearing to float in defiance of gravity. This skin is colored dynamically by the ambient temperature in patterns that move in the direction and speed of the wind.

The wind itself seems to dance around this kinetic-like structure as a display of concealed lights reacts dynamically to the speed and direction of the wind in a color scheme determined by the temperature of the air. The visual effect is atmospheric like the clouds moving overhead and the colors of the setting sun.

One could consider the schoool's technical center as a living entity. It is like an organism that extends its reach throughout the body of the school, working in symbiosis with the activities that occur inside the school building. This installation extends the life-form metaphor; the walls come alive like a sensory organ that reaches out towards, and reacts to the ambient environment surrounding the school. Reacting to environmental stimuli, this work, like nature itself, interacts with phenomena from the natural environment.

The work creates an engaging tension between nature and artifice while extending the structure‘s reference to nature and organic materials. With the color-toned play on light and architecture it becomes a sensitive skin towards the surroundings. Furthermore it is an artwork that uses scientific measuring tools to play on the imagination of the viewer in the creation of real science-fictions. It uses technology that is developed for attaining means of knowledge, and uses it for creating an imaginative and dynamic sense of place.

Accompanying the outdoor structure is a quotation of the work that speaks to the school’s pedagogic initiatives. Students are offered a simple, introductory insight into the mathematical relationship between simple geometries and lighting effects in a hands-on form.
