Camille Norment

Commissioned Solo Performance Series
Lyden av Kunst touring exhibition
2013-2015

Stamsund in Lofoten, 25 June 2014

In honor of the Lyden av Kunst exhibition tour, Camille Norment has created a new series of performances entitled The Friction of Water on Land. The work is inspired by stories relating glass to the human comedy, including the legend of the Sibyl whose body withered away in a bottle until only her voice was left, Ralph Ellison’s The Invisible Man, and Franz Mesmer’s ‘healing’ of hysterical women with the glass armonica.

Glass itself, is a formation of sand, water, and time.  The sound of glass is at once beauty and noise, and aligns itself with both the analog and the digital.  Glass is physically present, but its transparency renders it nearly invisible.  Invisibility is an existential reality for society’s ‘unseen’.

Camille Norment will perform using the rare glass armonica, electronics, voice, and various other sound sources.
